Press Release of Senator Heitkamp
HEITKAMP STATEMENT ON VOTES TO PROTECT SECOND AMENDMENT
Wednesday, April 17, 2013
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp issued the following statement after voting to protect the Second Amendment today.
The Senate today considered several proposals in response to the gun violence we have recently experienced in our country. Unfortunately, few of them got to the root of the problem. Throughout the debate, I stood firm and protected the Second Amendment rights of North Dakotans. I felt the Manchin-Toomey amendment ultimately would place undue burdens on law-abiding North Dakotans.
Because of my experience as an attorney general, I was adamant from the very beginning of this conversation that the focus should be on mental health issues, full and accurate reporting into the NICS database and ensuring that we are prosecuting criminals in possession of or trying to possess firearms. This conversation should be about what is in people’s minds, not about what is in their hands. The amendments I voted for today, begin to address these issues. I’ve thought long and hard about this, I’ve taken the tough meetings, and I’ve listened to the people of North Dakota.
