Heitkamp Completes Veterans Statewide Tour

Senator Heitkamp meets with veterans in Minot, Bismarck, Devils Lake, Grand Forks, and Fargo during Congressional District Work Period

FARGO – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp today completed a statewide listening tour to discuss the issues affecting our veterans. Heitkamp hosted meetings and roundtable discussions in Minot, Bismarck, Devils Lake, Grand Forks, and Fargo during the Congressional District Work Period.

“It was very important for me to meet with these brave, dedicated North Dakotans and discuss the challenges they are faced with.” “I am going to take the input I received back to Washington, DC to ensure our servicemembers live the best lives that they can,” Heitkamp said.

Heitkamp introduced a resolution to raise awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by introducing a resolution designating the month of June 2013 as National Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month. Heitkamp recruited a bipartisan coalition of colleagues to support her effort. Heitkamp’s resolution calls on the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and the Secretary of Defense to further educate service members, veterans, the families of service members and veterans, and the public about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is one of the greatest challenges facing our brave men and women while they are serving and after they return home from duty. One of the most important things we can do is to educate our servicemembers and the public about PTSD, so we can recognize the symptoms and take steps to help those who are suffering,” said Heitkamp.
