Senator Heidi Heitkamp United States Senator for North Dakota

Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp sent a bipartisan letter urging Senate leadership to immediately reauthorize funding for community health centers.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Heitkamp joined Senators Roy Blunt (R-MO), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and 64 of their Senate colleagues expressing their support for community health centers, which provide access to cost-effective primary and preventive care for families in North Dakota and across the country.

“Community health centers play an important role in the delivery of health care – especially for low income Americans and in rural areas like North Dakota,” Heitkamp said. “I’ve long fought to protect access to affordable health care for our communities, and federal support is critical to helping these facilities continue to serve those in rural communities. I’ll keep fighting for a bipartisan compromise to make sure rural health centers and the North Dakotans who rely on them are supported as we continue to debate the budget.”

The Community Health Center Fund expired on September 30, 2017, jeopardizing access to care and making it difficult for community health centers to adequately plan for staffing and other long-term needs.
