Washington, DC – This morning in her Washington, D.C. office, Senator Heidi Heitkamp met with Lt. General James Kowalski, Commanding Officer of the Air Force Global Strike Command, which develops and provides combat-ready forces for nuclear deterrence and global strike operations.
“General Kowalski’s mission is so critical to our national nuclear deterrence and global security strategies, especially in light of this week’s nuclear test in North Korea, and I appreciate his leadership. We had a great discussion and agreed that our servicemembers at Minot AFB are some of the best in our proud military.”
Heitkamp said “North Korea’s nuclear test this week was an extremely provocative act that clearly threatens global security and international peace. Now more than ever we need strong leadership to guide our nuclear forces and maintain an effective deterrence strategy. I will continue to oppose any attempts to unilaterally reduce our nuclear arsenal, especially cuts to our ICBM forces, which provide the strongest and most cost effective nuclear deterrent.”
