Senator Heitkamp’s office offers college students the opportunity to experience the legislative process firsthand. Internships are available year round and on a rolling basis in each of the senator’s offices: Bismarck, Fargo, Dickinson, Grand Forks, Minot and Washington, D.C.
Interns will gain experience with the legislative process and the operations of the senator’s office by working with staff on issues and interacting with constituents. Each intern will be given a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: conducting legislative research, assisting with correspondence, attending hearings and briefings and performing general administrative duties.
In Senator Heitkamp’s Washington, D.C. office, the press internship provides students and recent graduates with the opportunity to become embedded into Senator Heitkamp’s press team. Press interns sit in an office with Senator Heitkamp’s press team and get to learn about and participate in the daily operations of the team. Press interns play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of communication between the office, media, and North Dakotans through responsibilities such as compiling daily news clips, drafting press releases, assisting with digital media projects, and participating firsthand in an ambitious communications strategy. In addition, press interns can shadow Senator Heitkamp during press interviews and speeches, and participate in strategic planning meetings. An interest in press and communications is preferred, but previous knowledge of it is not required. Press interns must have excellent writing skills, a strong attention to detail, work well on a team, and have the ability to meet tight deadlines.
Interns in state offices support office staff by working to address constituent concerns, performing legislative research and assist with special projects and events.

Internships are for college sophomores, juniors and seniors, and preference will be given to candidates who are from North Dakota or attend an in state college or university.
We prefer students who can commit 30-35 hrs/week, but can be flexible depending on the right candidate.

- Fall Internship Duration: August - November
- Winter/Spring Internship Duration: January - April
- Summer Internship Duration: May - August
Internships in Senator Heitkamp’s office are paid and students are also eligible to receive college credit.
